From Storyboards to Animatics

The Power of PSDs

The PSD format is Photoshop’s default file extension that is capable of saving layers, creating layer folders, adjustment layers and so forth. Another big bonus is that the PSD format is lossless. Layers and folders are very useful for dividing an image into animation ready components.

To color or not to color

Most storyboards are not fully colored. Some elements are colored in order to bring out this or that element. One example might be a couple is filled with a simple color to set them apart from a crowd in a dance floor.

PSD layer usage in After Effects

Since both softwares we will use in this tutorial are made by the same company (Photoshop and After Effects), they are fully compatible with each other. After Effects can import any format that Photoshop saves as. For the purpose of this tutorial, we’ll be saving everything in Photoshop as PSDs whenever we are using Photoshop.
