Using shadows

Functions of shadows

  1. Defines spatial relationships between the object being illuminated and the object(s) it is sitting on or near.
  2. Add to the composition by using shadows to break up dull surfaces.
  3. Add contrast and allow some objects to stand out more than others.
  4. Indicate that the space in the frame is larger than it appears. Shadows that fall out of frame give illustrate the idea that scene is larger than what is currently shown.
  5. Shadows integrate elements within the scene by tying them to the ground they are sitting on.
  6. Shadows work better if they do not clutter the scene. If multiple lights are used, be careful not to allow all of them to cast shadows.
  7. Cast shadows bring another level of believability to the scene if the shadow color matches the object casting it.
